Hamilton range - deciduous oaks along creek - hills grass-covered. Noted pair of Say Phoebe along road in grass country with frequent rock outcrops. Coral Hollow Emi E Carnegie in San Joaquin Co., Calif. Met Dr. Stifton with 8 members of Paleontology U.C class at fossil localities. Coral Hollow at this point was a barren, windswept, narrow valley with frequent rock outcrops on the slopes. There was no riparian growth along the stream although +2 miles upstream we saw a grove of cottonwoods. Wind was blowing from west, varying from 0 to +12 mph. The entire aspect was of dry country clearly in rain shadow at western edge of San Joaquin valley. Lower limit of oak woodland could be seen about 1 mile up ravine draining from the south. Large bare patches and contractions gave evidence of overgrazing; sheep scarnous valley. Pipit - flock of + 100 on flat near creekbed. Bank Swallow - 2 seen near road Rock Wren - heard singing from outcrop areas Gopher Snake - noted one running self on barren slope about 4:30 PM - loose appearance of skin led me to believe that individual had just come out of dormancy.
