With zoologist section (10 people) up Canyon Rd. & main road to Botanic Garden (9:15 AM). Total hours 8:15 - 12:00. Noted song of 6 Purple Finches subsided after 9:00. House Finch singing from dead tree on creek a few yards above Strawberry Pool. Downy Woodpecker "drilled" in same tree later; Western Flycatcher called from nearby. Bush-tit: two isolated pairs seen and a group of 4-5 individuals (count by ear) in another locality - no nests located. Orange-crowned Warbler singing, less energetically after 9:30. Ruby Crowned Kinglets singing involved long songs. Hutton Vireo - not heard during entire morning; (H. & E. Childs) made similar observation California Thrasher - one singing at NE edge of Botanic Garden. Plain Titmouse singing throughout morning Selasphorus hummingbird 18, 17 seen along creek. Steller Jay - group of 4 in laurel in Botanic Garden; 2 flew to conifers NW (one followed the other). Wildcat Canyon, Contra Costa Co., Calif. In area about Jewel Lake 4:15 - 5:00 accompanied by H. Williamson. Clear; breeze westerly 12 mph dropping almost to zero. Noted Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Orange-crowned Warbler, Steller Jay, Goshawk (1 on lake), Black Phoebe, Song Sparrow, Calif. Quail, Wigeon calling. Water flowing over spillway at lake.
