KDixon 1949 Journal Feb 9. 2 1/2 mi SE Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Cornell had located 3 Calif Quail as I proceeded to the large brush patch on the NW face of this draw. Shot a Scrub Jay which flew apparently from its roost about 2 feet inside the periphery of a live oak. Bird flew 25 yards downslope where Cornell knocked it out of a tree with a second shot. I flushed several quail from the brush patch but failed to hit any. Cornell took a σ quail (KD #32) frightened from roost in a live oak along the brook. Attempts at others to no avail. Heard a Squirrel Owl in willows along creek bordering walnut grove as we returned to car, another owl calling 100 yards or so downstream. Our attempts to mimic the call were too crude for the owl ceased calling. Departed at 6:30 PM. Feb 19. Strawberry Canyon Univ. Calif. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif. Clear mild morning. Out with Zool 113 class in canyon studying habitats. Noted nothing exceptional. Mar 13. Walked up paved road to Strawberry Pool and down along canyon Rd to Stadium. Accompanied by M Williamson. Noted Black Phoebe singing from telephone wires, heard Ruby-crowned Kinglet singing in conifers near Stadium. Orange-crowned Warbler singing from a number of perches near the pool, the first this year. Collected 3 Triturus forosus and one Rana aurora trapped in old fence post hole near pool (Triturus given to W Cohen). Noted Downy Woodpecker drumming
