KDixon 1949 Journal 7. Feb. 8. NE Face, San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Robin - plentiful - in open grassland Bufo - one heard on dry chaparral slope Hyla - several heard in pond in Wildcat Canyon Scapanus - one found dead in grass-drowned? San Pablo Reservoir, Contra Costa Co., Calif. 1:00-1:30 PM - 2 flocks totalling 40 odd Canada goose noted on lake - several birds on bank out of water. Ferruginous Rough-leg perched on telephone pole, dropped to ground, returned to perch - prey (?) not seen. Feb. 9. 2 1/2 mi. SE Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Drove part of way in on muddy roads toward ranch on which R.E. Stinton resides, parking car & walking last 1/2 mile. Accompanied by Joseph Cornell. Heard 2 white-breasted Nuthatchee in walnut grove area, one of these in tall deciduous trees (alder or willow). Arrived at area where collecting had been done previously at about 5:00 PM. High, thin overcast; calm; sun dim. Ground moist from recent rains, weather warmer impact few days, no ice on puddles, although snow remains on top of Mt Diablo. Cornell hunted the westernmost of 2 draws draining to the north from a ridge which may be the divide between San Pablo & Walnut Creek watersheds. I hunted the eastern draw, noting the following birds: Robin, Nuttall Woodpecker, Plain Titmouse, Hermit Thrush, Bluebird, Spotted Towhee, Golden-crowned Sparrow), Brown Towhee (1). Crossed over to draw to west at 5:40 - duck gathering.
