K'Dixon 1949 Journal 5. Feb.8. NE Face San Pablo Ridge Contra Costa Co, Calif. quail population study area. The land on which we were walking was posted as watershed area by the East Bay Municipal Utilities District. This NE face of the ridge was cut by numerous side draws from the broad valley of San Pablo Creek, the smaller draws merging into several main stream courses closer to the creek (now the reservoir). Water level of the reservoir appeared to be 6-8 ft. below "normal". Vegetation was chaparral of Baccharis pilularis, Pinus diversifolia, and occasional Diplacus with woodland of live oak, laurel and Fesculus along the stream- courses in some places. Intervening ridges were grass-covered, principally on the south-facing slopes sketch above fairly typical of distribution of these types. This area was grazed moderately to lightly by cattle, several small dams with water being present, the largest pond perhaps 40-50 ft across. Water was running in most of the draws although not enough to indicate more than a temporary water supply. In the lower portion of one draw we found the remnants of a cabin. The N facing slope here was notably steep and the riparian growth included 2 Alnus and a maple with numerous laurels
