KDixon 1949 Journal Feb 4. 3mi S Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif. Picked up Barn Owl lead at side of road - farming area - rice fields. 5 mi N Davis, Yolo Co., Calif. Cold windy day, raining intermittently. Collected #326 & American Goldfinch from flock feeding at edge of road in rice field country - growth of weeds along fence row. In another field noted piles of rice hulls where threshing had been done - flocks of Brewer Blackbirds apparently feeding on rice grains; calls of Redwings heard. Noted flock of 5 or 9 Columbavivia at same locality. Pair of Marsh Hawks hunting over fields. Time 11:30 AM In one rice field with ditches freshly checked noted a flock of perhaps 1500 Snow Geese. Saw one Ross Goose, + 12 Mallards, + 6 Pintails, several White-fronted Geese. Also saw Crow, Sparrow Hawk, Flicker, Veery Sparrow along roads; also Blue Heron, Ring-necked Pheasant Univ. Calif. Campus, Davis, Yolo Co., Calif. Noted Calif. Jay on quadrangle of campus and one Mockingbird nearby. Feb. 8 NE Face San Pablo Ridge, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Drove to area with A.S. Leopold in University car, proceeding through Tilden Park to "Inspiration Point" overlooking San Pablo Reservoir. We left the car and proceeded on foot following the contour and working downslope, looking for a prospective
