Dixon 1949 Journal Jan 27. 2 1/2 mi SE Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif. back of Brown Towhees on the ranch may be due to character of brush which is largely deciduous except for about 3 large patches of Baccharis with a minimum of edge. I noticed some very dwarfed Adenostoma on the south face of overridge. Jan 29. South slope of Mt. Hamilton, Santa Clara Co., Calif. noted 3 Yellow-billed Magpies along road in area of deciduous oaks (valley oak?) 11 miles by road from Lick Observatory. Area was below level where Wigger Pines were encountered. Noted 2-3 Scrub Jays higher on slope in area where snows prevailed. Jan 31. Univ Calif Campus, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Henry Clifts called attention of several persons to presence of a Slate-colored Junco foraging with Oregon Juncos in area S of life Sciences Bldg. at 11:30 A.M. Feb 2. mid-afternoon; west side of MVZ. Heard squealing and noted Robins flying upward from shrubs on either side of loading platform. A minute or so elapsed, squealing stopped and a Sparrow Hawk flew upward & over trees to west. F.A. Pitelka had seen the hawk attempt to take one of the horde of Robins feeding on Cotoneaster & other berries. Hawk had borne Robin to ground beneath low brush but had been unable to kill it apparently. Robin did not leave & may have been injured.
