KDixon 1948 Journal 34. Dec.25 /mi W Campo, 2500 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. disappeared but I located them in some oaks 100 yards N of where I had seen them before. I knocked some feathers out of one and they disappeared again. One bird apparently remained in an oak for I did not see it leave yet could not see its perch. Saw Spotted Towhee in Eriogonum patch. Dehnel reported seeing Sharp-shinned Hawk but no other birds in Riparian woodland. We left area at 3:15, driving westward on Hwy 74. Cottonwood Creek, 2 mi N Barrett Jct., San Diego Co., Calif. Area where creek flows southerly through narrow canyon. Elev. about 1000 ft. Riparian growth of cottonwood, sycamore, and smaller willow. Hillsides with coastal sagebrush assocn of Eriogonum fasciculatum, Artemisia californica, Lotus scoparia, Phoebe laurina rather openly spaced. Some live oaks, Ceanothus & other chaparral on E-facing slopes. My impression is that this area has been burned over although perhaps not within the past 10 years. In area 4:00 PM until 5:10 PM. Dehnel went upstream & I went downstream along edge of hill. Heard Brown Towhees occasionally but saw none. Spotted Towhee absent. Heard California Jay once. Snaked up Ruby-crowned Kinglet but no other birds. Dehnel reported
