K Dixon 1948 Journal 33. Dec 28 3 mi W Boulevard, ± 3500 ft, San Diego Co., Calif. Dehnol collected Scrub Jay (KD) in live oak near road - valley with grain on flat, chaparral on hills. Dehnol took another jay in shrub beside road 5 mi W of above locality. In this area on a farmer's pond we noted 2 coots and 4 American Magnums. Arrived at Campo passing through at 2:00 PM. 1 mi W Campo, 2500 ft, San Diego Co., Calif. In this area immediately downstream from an earth-fill dam, Campo Creek had cut down about 15 feet below the level of its banks. Cottonwoods, wilows and sycamores grew in the bottom, the wilows abundantly tangled close to the ground. The area on the NW side of the creek had been burned off perhaps 3-4 years ago it was recovering slowly. live oaks were in nearly normal foliage. Principal chaparral elements were scrub oak and Adenostoma fasciculatum the latter about 3 ft. high. Night breeze from NE increased to 12 mph at times. I crossed the creek some 3ft wide, and worked through scattered live oaks. located 3 Scrub Jays knocking one down with load of b's but it recovered & flew on. Heard Brown Towhee and collected another (see spec acct). Plain Titmouse pair in live oak giving location notes as they foraged. Other birds remarkably silent: 2 California Woodpeckers seen & one Flicker flushed. The Jays
