K Dixon 1948 Journal 32. Dec 23. 4 mi S Dulzura ± 1300 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. and myself in 1946, known to Kneitzsch as locality for Manotus. See species acc't Brown Towhee. No further incidents - left area & returned to La Mesa by same route. Dec 28. En route from La Mesa to Boulevard 3200 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. left La Mesa about 9:30 AM accompanied by Paul Wehnel. Drove to Jamul, then to El Cajon & via Hwy 80 to Boulevard. Noted nothing exceptional. 3 mi SE Boulevard ± 3400 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. Cool sunny day, breeze from E 6-8 mph. Area of steep rocky hills with decomposed granite soil moist from recent rains. Chaparral rather open chiefly of Adenostoma fasciculatum & the taller A. stafifolium, scattered Quercus dumosa, manzanita, juniper, Ceanothus sp., yucca whipplei, Y. mohavensis. Hunted in area 11:25 - 12:40. Birds quiet. Flock of a dozen Junco (pink-sided) in open area at junction of two brooks - heard one Rufous-named Sparrow. Scrub Jay (2) flew over. Wehnel shot one Brown Towhee (see species acc't). Heard Anna Hummingbird diving repeatedly over one spot. Heard Calif. Thrasher. I fired at Jay as did Wehnel another time but birds flew on in each case. Wehnel collected a Jay and reported seeing a Wren-Tit. We left area driving westward on Hwy 80. Turned left on State Hwy 94 toward Campo.
