K Dixon 1948 Journal Dec 23. En route from La Mesa to Dulzura, San Diego Co., Calif. Paul Dehnel, driving E on State Hwy 94 through Jamul. 4 mi WNW Dulzura, ± 1000 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. Hunted along road paralleling Dulzura Creek for ± 20 minutes after about 2:30 PM - scattered sycamores + live oaks along stream - north-facing slope with live oaks, Plus Lurina + coastal sage elements. Audubon Warblers plentiful, pair of Brown Towhees (1 collected), pair of Calif. Calif. woodpecker Jays in oaks very wary, Spotted Towhee. Rain commenced so we left. 4 mi S Dulzura, ± 1300 ft., San Diego Co., Calif. Hunted along small streamcourse from 3:15 til 4:30 - rain had ceased, weather as before but calm. Noted following species: Audubon Warbler, Rufous-crowned Sparrow (call "dear dear dear" heard), Brown Towhee (4 taken), Spotted Towhee, Red-shafted Flicker Nuttall Woodpecker (Dehnel took) Calif Jay heard. Situation here was of sycamore + live oaks along stream (latter predominant), the topography fairly steep rolling hills, the valley draining to the south (toward Marrone Valley?). Slopes had been burned perhaps 2 years ago. Plus Lurina coming out in new growth as was Salvia spiana. lotus scoparia seemed retarded + grasses were growing up. Soil wet, road slippery.
