K Dixon 1948 Journal 30. Dec 22. En route to Vallecito, San Diego Co., Calif. Continued trip via Julian down Banner grade on State Hwy 78 - noted 2 Calif Jays in juniper area E of Banner. One Say Phoebe in open area of San Felipe wash (crosstle Bush - yucca mohavensis). Arrives at old stage station at 12:00 noon. Phainopselas and Western Bluebirds abundant, some flocked, the Bluebird Gregarians, both species perched on mesquite which had mistletoe berries for food supply. Noted lone mockingbird on mesquite, squeaked up Ruby-crowned Kinglet and Pipilo maculatus at edge of Pluchea thicket (plant coll. # 353) - took Pipilo (3/10) apparently alive. Quail called and 3 flew at sound of shot. R Bowman reported seeing Shrike, heard Verdins and saw flock of 6-8 White-crowned Sparrows. Several White-throated Swifts were flying overhead and Red-shafted Flicker was calling. Rain commenced at 2:00 PM and we started back to Julian. Attempts to collect Jays in junipers E of Banner to no avail. Rained steadily until our return to La Mesa at 5:00 pm. Dec 23. En route from La Mesa to Dulzura, San Diego Co., Calif.
