Hunted quail with Hank Childs & Joe Cornell - 5:40 PM - 6:20 PM - see species acc't., Lophortyx Californica Dec 21. 4 mi E Alpine, San Diego Co., Calif. Cloudy afternoon, 2 PM - noted yellow shafted Fleicher flying across broad open valley - grass with Quercus argelmannii at borders & Salix on deep cut streamcourse. Drove up old Viejas grade to Descanso - noted complete absence of Calif. Jays - in one chaparral area I called up Chamaea, Junco, Pipilo maculates Noted 2 Calif. Jays in mixed pine - margarita area N of Cuyamaca Lake (area closed to hunting) 3 mi SW Ramona, San Diego Co., Calif. Area of live oak & Adenostoma chaparral along streamcourse 5:40 PM overcast, light dim. Heard Pair Brown Towhees calling chip in brush; birds wary and I couldn't get a shot - one kept calling and moved 50 yards into riparian Salix. Also heard Chamaea, Pipilo maculates Dewick Wren. Dec 22. Enroute to Vallecito, San Diego Co., Calif. left La Mesa at 9:15 accompanying TE Reed and R.J. Bowman. heaviest rain falling. Drove tim El Cajon to Descanso, rain continuing. Ran into light snowfall 4 mi S Cuyamaca Lake, snow continuing until the lake was reached.
