KDixon 1948 28. Journal Nov 21. Stinton Ranch, 2 1/2 mi. SE Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Dr. Stinton and his nephew, R.E. Stinton, left about 9:45 AM and Cornell & I hunted separately first on a north-facing slope of an E-W trending ridge. Vegetation was mostly oak woodland where I was. Noted lepus and a single grail which took refuge in a brush pile. Passus inornatus the only bird calling. Flock of Zontichia coronate and pair of Pipilo fuscus moving from one blue patch to another ( batter way - I couldn't get a shot). We proceeded along west-facing slope after 10:30 noting the following birds : Sialia mexicana (overhead), Hylocicla guttata Regulus calendula, Vires huttoni in addition to those mentioned above. Pipilo fuscus on SE facing slope in Diplacus - wary. Aphelocoma + Glares in oaks. On shaded NW-facing Baccharis - Phamnus - Plus patch 4-5 acres in extent jumped flock of holhorts, numbering perhaps +50. Birds moved away from me on foot whereas I entered brush & flew individually from peripheral "denirulas" of brush entering grassland. Took several shots but obtained no birds. Cornell saw one Sylvilagus bachmani We left area at 12:30, returning to Berkeley. In general birds difficult to approach perhaps because of wind.
