R Dixon 1948 Journal Oct.3. Bear Cr., 2 mi. NNW Orinda, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Overcast; intermittent misty rain; calm. Noted coevy of 13 Lophortyx (♂♂, ♂♀) foraging at edge of grassy field and oak woods. One ♂ chased simultaneously by 2 other ♂♂ when former joined flock from edge of trees — pursuit occurred, the first ♂ circling among the foraging quail. Noted Lewis Woodpecker on telephone pole and another flying above adjacent peach orchard. Time 4:15 PM. Nov21 Stinson Ranch, 2½ mi. SE Lafayette Contra Costa Co., Calif. Clear mild day with wind from E, ± 10 mph (effect on skin noticeable). Reached ranch about 9:45 accompany- ing R. A. Stinton and Joe Connell. Stinton collected imm. Western Red-tail at gate of ranch. Noted pair of Pipilo fuscus which I failed to get shot at. We proceeded to a point on the eastern end of the ranch where Dr Stinton and his nephew left us. Connell and I proceeded to hunt separately in area which appeared as follows: Terrain was of steep, rounded hills with rather deep gullies, vegetation was open woodland of Q uercus agrifolia, Q wislizenii, Q. Kelloggii, Aesculus umbellaria with undergrowth of grass. On shaded slopes brush patches of Rhus Baccata, Phammus Diplacus and Rhus thickets on sunny slopes. Ground was moist from recent rains and grass was shooting.
