K Dixon 1947 2. Bonasa umbellus July 5. 2 mi E Shiver, 6500 ft, Carbon Co., Montana. to firs at base of slope. He collected this bird (N.C.R. 637) as it was walking away from place where it landed. He preserved the contents of the crop noting that they were of this individual. July 29. Bird Creek, 18 mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft, Beaverhead Co., Mont. Flushed grouse in aspen grove between lodgepole pine forest and burned clearing at 8:15 AM on sunny day. Bird flew 25 ft (approx) and dropped behind shrub, flying again as I advanced. Bird flapped wings 2 or 3 times and apparently set sail. I followed it down slope and sighted bird (♂R 50) and took it in area 50 yards down and around slope in open growth of lodgepole pine with little under- growth. Crop contents of bird ([illegible]). Flushed grouse in open grove of young aspens 12' high at 7:15 in evening. Stalked bird which I located and crept see dimly through brush, appearantly strutting and displaying ruff. I collected this grouse (♂, 252); crop empty. July 30. Bird Creek, 18 mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft, Beaverhead Co., Mont. Noted Ruffed Grouse, apparently ♀, in area in which ♂(252) was taken yesterday; grouse in grove of aspen and birch, gave clucking and morning notes apparently calling up young (peep heard in answer). Bird perched on limb 3 ft above ground.
