K Dixon 1947 Bonasa umbellus July 5. 2 mi E Shriver, 6500 Ft., Carbon Co., Montana. Walked up narrow canyon running north and south, streambed dry. Entire area coniferous forest, the slopes of the immediate vicinity being covered with Pseudotsuga, Pinus flexata, and Abies sp. Under- brush broken & scattered, Juniperus sibirica, Ribes, Symphoricarpos, and Acer. I walked up path beside streambed and noted something walk- ing on other side of clump of Abies, going in opposite direction. I waited and a grouse appeared with neck ruff evident. Bird did not appear to be alarmed but paused and then continued walking farther. It stopped again, a few feet away at the base of another clump of fir. I collected the bird, an adult ♀, molting, broad patch refathering, Ova measured 15mm, largest ovum 2 mm. Noted patches of aspens on slope to west. Half an hour later I walked up same path and flushed a Ruffed Grouse about 100 yards upstream from area where I collected. Bird flew from fir along streamcourse into dense coniferous growth and I did not locate it again. Harold Reynolds collected a ♀ bird in this vicinity at 1:00 PM this date, presumably the mate of the ♀ (No 1/2). He was walking up the same path and the grouse flushed from a windfall in a clump of fir, flying 30 yards (paced)
