KDixon 1947 Journal July 28. En Route, Birch Creek to Dillon, 5100 ft., Beaverhead Co, Mont. left camp at 1:30 P.M., driving to Dillon. Noted Horned Larks, Lesser Sandpaws and ? Marsh Harts in grassland, Kildeer, Barn Swallow and Redwing beside marshy area. Inspected barns at ranch on river 1 mi W Dillon, where W Russell collected Screach Owl perched on rafters. Drove to area 1 mile east of Madison County line where we noted congregating Kools, Bank, Cliff and Barn Swallows at edge of marsh. Returned to Dillon and drove to area 1 mi W, where I set 39 mouse traps in area of rocky slopes sparsely covered with Artemesia tridentata and occasional Chrysothamnus, grass and Nighthawks. Noted Rock Wrens in area. Noted bats in area; flight apparently did not begin until complete darkness with 3/4 moon. July 27. 1 mi W Dillon, 5100 ft., Beaverhead Co, Mont. Ran traps at 5:20 A.M. Caught 6 Peromyscus and 7 Eutamias in 39 traps in area described above, all slope exposures and degrees of cover except that higher percentage of mammals taken in limited areas of taller, denser Artemesia. Birch Cr., 1 1/2 mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft., Beaverhead Co, Mont. on S-facing slope. Walked to aspen grove 1/2 mile W of camp. Noted ? Hairy Woodpecker drilling and giving "pick" call at edge of grove (25 yards from point where ?(241) 107.
