K Dixon 1947 Journal July 27, Birch Creek, 18 mi W Dillon, 7100 ft., Beaverhead Co., Mont. (stumps remaining after beaver workings) and coarse grasses. Caught immature Peromyscus at base of willow beside creek. Worked upstream in rocky, gravelly, floodplain with scattered willow, noting Western Tanager, Lincoln Sparrow, Junco, Tolmie Warbler 9 and Spotted Sandpiper. Walked upslope in area of burn (several years old) following edge of aspen grove. Rufous Hummingbird only bird noted; Citellus lateralis the only mammal. Entered aspen grove and flushed a grouse which I didn't actually see; bird 15 yards inside grove, permitted approach to within 20 ft before flying. I followed it downslope and heard it fly again at some interval after I collected Dryostates villosus (241) in the aspen grove. Noted Robin in bush at lower edge of Lodgepoles. Shot Crossbill which I could not locate; followed rest of flock but unable to collect any birds. Returned to camp at 7:15. July 28, Birch Creek, 18 mi W Dillon, 7100 ft., Beaverhead Co., Mont. Caught Sorex (242) in trap at base of willow 20 ft from creek. Caught Sorex (243) in trap between logs (8" from water) (trap in which Peromyscus (239) was taken yesterday.
