K Dixon 1947 Journal July 25. Birch Creek, 18 mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft., Beaverhead Co, Mont. Clear, cool morning. Ran traps at 6:15 AM. Took microtus (37, 223) in trap under log in grassy area among willows in beaver dam vicinity. Trap 6 ft. from one in which a Zapus was collected. Returned to camp at 6:45. Relocated 15 traps in same type of habitat trapped in previously (willow shrub - marsh grass or fallen logs in willow and lodgepole grove respectively). Flushed 2 Ruffed Groose immatures (quail size) in area of fallen log in lodgepole grove 30 yards from creek. Collected Tiamophis on sandy bank of creek in area of marsh grasses 6 to 8 inches high and scattered bad willow thickets. July 26. Birch Creek 18 mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft., Beaverhead Co, Mont. Clear, cold morning. Ran traps at 6:00 AM. Caught Sorex palustris (230) in trap under dead log in grass 1' high; fallen timbers and shrubby willows in area, trap set 7' from beaver dam. Caught immature Peromyscus under fallen log beside stream (at edge of lodgepole grove, area not grassy). Caught Buffs (227) in trap set at base of willow in same area where Sorex palustris trapped (mouse fork in trap baited with rolled oats). Caught Zapus (231) in trap in grass at base of downed log in beaver dam area. Caught Sorex (229) in trap at base of pine in grass-willow area 30 yards from creek.
