K Dixon 1947 Journal July 27. Bird Creek, 16 mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft, Beaverhead Co, Mont. Sphyrapicus varius flew into bend on ashen trunk and I took it (♂, 218). Did the bird fly there in response to my hooting? Melospiza lincolnii and Vireo gilvus singing in area. Collected Empidonax (♀, 216) in ash-grave; ♂♂ in area giving single phrase song sounding like "clip" of a wooden quality. Downstream song had been different (see spec. acct). Washed back toward camp, noting Chipping Sparrow and Red-shafted Flicker in addition to other species mentioned. Collected a Junco (♂, 225) in willow thicket near stream; bird with mate, had flown to lodgepole logs nearby. Noted Snowshoe Hare in grove of lodgepole pines 50 yards from stream; hare hopping among fallen logs in grove. Animal then "froze" and I collected it (♀, 213). Returned to camp at 8:00. Noted Mountain Chickadees in lodgepoles of campground. N.C. Reynolds collected Perisoreus in camp. Ran traps in evening, relocating 15. Caught Sorex (♂, 217) in grassy area among willow; trap baited with rolled oats and set in dense runway; within 15 ft I trap in which a Talus was taken.
