K Dixon 147 Journal July 23. Birch Creek, 18mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft., Beaverhead Co. MONT. up Hermit Thrush but couldn't get in a shot. Collected Vireo Gilsoni (♂, 207) singing in top of lodgepole pine at edge of aspen grove at base of hill. Shot immature Hermit Thrush and noted Pileolated Warbler in area. Chichadee heard. Collected Empidonax (♂, 208) singing from top of snag in same area. Song similar to that I bird taken at Shiver, Carbon Co. Also noted: Junco. Caught Sorey (♂, 210) in same trap in which Zapus (♀, 202) was taken this morning. Reset all traps. Noted nighthawks flying above creek. July 24. Birch Creek, 18mi NW Dillon, 7100 ft., Beaverhead Co. MONT. Clear cool morning. Ran traps at 6:00 AM. Caught 2 Zapus, one Sorey (no 213) and one Peromyscus and one Bufo, the latter in some fallen logs among willows 30 yards from the creek. Walked upstream among willows on the north bank. Willows shrubby to 15 ft in height; growth open with grassy areas (marshy), ponds, sandbars and lodgepole groves interspersed. Collected Melospiza melodia (♂, 219) in willow thicker. Noted Actitis macularia adult with one fledgling walking over sandbar. Another adult flew to perch in willow; nervous, bobbed tail, gave "squeak" call. Noted Lincoln Sparrows in area. Entered mixed aspen and lodgepole grove near creek; hissed and called up Robins.
