R Dixon 1947 Journal July 15. 2 mi NE Cooke, 8500 ft., Park Co. Montana. Set 3 in fallen timber near forest and 15 in meadow + edge of forest all along stream. Collected Picoides tridactyla in spruce fir forest. July 16. 2 mi NE Cooke, 8500 ft., Park Co., Montana. Cloudy and unsettled; had rained during night. Ran traplines 06:15-06:45. (caught Zapune (? no 171) in trap on willow (dwarf) bordered stream in meadow, 25 yards below trap sites where this species taken on previous days. Caught Microtus (no 170) in similar situation on a lower meadow. Both take at water's edge. Went into deep forest of spruce and fir and used Horned Owl calls - only response was from Golden-crowned Kinglets. In another location I hissed repeatedly and called up Juncoes, Chickadees (mountain), Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Audubon Warbler (took ?, no 174) and Clipping Sparrow. Collected Cutamiae (? no 173) on log in clearing in vicinity where Hermit Thrush was singing. Collected Lincoln Sparrow singing from spf fir tree (?, no 172). Hailstorm of brief duration in afternoon, clearing weather in evening. Reset 41 traps in essentially the same sites as on July 15.
