R Dixon 1947 Journal July 14. 2 mi NE Cooke, 8500 ft., Park Co., Montana. ground 25 feet from water. Caught one immature Peromyscus out of 15 traps in dry forest I denuded logs. Caught Zapus (no. 157, 158) along creek in meadow (bordered with scull willow), the two traps being 30 feet apart. Left camp at 7:00 AM accompanying H.E. Reynolds up slope to west of camp. Collected Pink-sided Junco No 160 at edge of clearing. Took 4 Cassin Finches in flock feeding in fir trees near road; flock unusually tame. Went upslope with myself to berch in Lame - Fir forest where he had found Blue Grone; none in evidence. Noted pair of Golden-armed Kinglets in this area. 2 mi N Cooke 9000 ft., Park Co., Montana. Arrived in meadows above timberline at 7:00 AM. Walked NW along base of mountain ridge where snow banks were melting. Meadow dotted with occasional clumps of Abia and Tenzga. Pipits flushed occasionally; Mountain Bluebirds seen high on slopes where only tundra herbaceous growth + nearly melted willow were found among the snowbanks. Flushed 3 Black heneoctetes at edge of melting snowbank. Walked along ridge for one mile and returned, flushing group of 3 twice before locating pairs believed to be from that group foraging on ground below snowbanks.
