R Dixon 1947 Journal July 13. 2 mi NE Cooke, 8500 ft, Park Co., Montana. Cassin Finches this morning but was unable to take any. Noted Robin at edge of meadow & Clarkes Nutcracker flying downhill. Collected 2 Pine Grosbeak foraging in fir (Abies) at edge of meadow. Bird (no/157) had beetle in bill. Noted pair of Chipping Sparrows in adjacent tree; chased intruder away. Proceeded upslope through rather open forest with several brooks running down. Underbrush absent; few downed logs. Called up a pair of Pine Grosbeaks and took a F no/155. Shot at a Red-breasted Nutcracker & lost it. Walked up onto flat or bench somewhat below timberline but some 300 ft higher than camp. Area of open coniferous forest (Picea, Abies, Pinus aristata); no underbrush. Small patches of snow remaining. Collected lone S Blue Grosbeak (see sp acct). Returned to camp. 06:30 PM - 7:20 PM - set 15 mouse traps in area of fallen timbers in conifers 200 yards east of camp. Set 10 traps along creek. Baited all with rolled oats. July 14. 2 mi NE Cooke, 8500 ft, Park Co., Montana Clear morning, very cold. Ran trap lines at 06:30 AM. Caught Clethionomyx (no/156) under base of fallen log on moist, moss-covered
