K Dixon 1947 Journal July 12. 2 mi NE Cooke, 8500 ft., Park Co., Montana. Continued walking up slopes & across meadow covered with grasses & herbs b inches high with boggy areas of willow 2-3 ft high near running brooks. Coniferous forest cut-over of Bristle cone Pine, Abies, shrubs. Collected ? Pine Grosbeak feeding in herbage in meadow. Bird too badly damaged to retain. Took Male Finch (no 144) from flock feeding in similar situation. Noted Pink-sided Duncas & Red-beasted Nuthatches in this area also. At a somewhat higher elevation I saw a Clark Nuttacher in a fir tree & heard the call of a Hairy Woodpecker. I walked toward the source of the latter & the bird flew to a dead tree & moved about rapidly apparently scolding, giving "pick" calls repeatedly & drumming occasionally. Collected his bird, a ? (no 146). Continued up the steeper slope in a westerly direction, reaching timberline at 8:00 AM at an elevation estimated at 9000 ft. Noted no birds so continued across somewhat level & gradually sloping flats at base of Baren Peak. Meadows of low grass, with rock outcroppings & large banks of snow melting & giving rise to brooks. Walked on bench above a rockslide, flushing a Robin from the pool formed by a melting snowbank. Looked down
