KDixon 1947 Journal 87. July 8. 2 mi E thrives, 6500 ft., Carbon Co. mont. Noted Warbling Vireo, Black-capped Chickadee in area and collected singing ♀ Melospiza melodia (no 133). Left this area at 7:00 AM and went to Aspen grove beside barn on ranch below camp. Located tree with two holes in it, tapped trunk causing adult ♂ Sapouche to fly out - bird perched for a few seconds but I couldn't get in a shot. Worked in area above camp 7:30-9:30 AM. Called up Mountain Chickadee but couldn't get in shot, noted pair of Indulion Warblers and flocks of Pine Siskins. Located small group of Crossbills feeding in pines on west slope. I was able to move underneath tree and knocked feathers off one bird causing the flock to fly. Flock in 3 adjacent trees. Waited 25 minutes but they did not return. Walked up slope and then down slope and up creek. Collected ♂ Pink-sided Junco (No 136) alone in Douglas Fir. Used Horned Owl calls from pine grove for 7 minutes - no response. Walked downstream to point 100 yards above camp, noting Siskins & Juncos feeding on ground beneath pines on shaded slope. Juncos' movements could be followed in 6
