K Dixon 1947 85. Journal July 7. 2 mi E Shiver, 6500 ft., Carbon Co., Montana died down after 7:30 AM. Birds noticeably inactive during height of wind. Walked down- stream 1/4 mile to area f willow thickets at junction of creeks; area worked in July 6. I entered middle of thickets and commenced speaking and hissing; called up pair of Yellow- throats, 3 Warbling Vireos and (presumably ?) Tolmie Warbler. Shot at latter & missed. Continued working in this area collecting a pair of Yellowthroats (no's. 127, 128) and an adult ? Song Sparrow (no 126). Noted Black-capped Chickadee & pair of Yellow Warblers but unable to get in shot. Catbird singing in area. Collected Red-naped Sapsucker (no 130) which flew in to trunk f willow slumb as I was hissing to call up chickadee. Attempts to collect ? Lazuli Bunting f no avail - only one which responded to call (pair together on July 6) rejected in favor of Tolmie Warbler. Shot immature Song Sparrow and lost a singing male in underbrush. Called up Setophaga ruticella &? in willow thickets. Noted a hummingbird dive down at a thicket including 2 dead willows. Bird made peculiar sound at bottom f dive, similar to small scale Nighthawk booming.
