July 4.
2 mi E Shriver, 6500 ft., Carbon Co., Mont.
forest, chiefly Douglas Fir with some Engelmann Spruce and Bristle-cone Pine (Pinus aristata).
Understory shrubs Ribes, Juniperus siberica,
J. communis. Banks of creek grassy with
scattered aspens extending up onto slopes.
Creebed 50 yards across, stream 1-2 feet
across. Peaks to S & SW above timberline
and heavily timbered on lower slopes. Area
had been logged half a century ago and
recently (minor operations).
Went out into woods near camp 12:30 -
2:00 - shot Empidory flycatcher in
willow - bird seemed to prefer "inside" of
vegetation. Left bird on log while chasing
Andubon Warbler - chipmunks apparently
removed flycatcher. Took Of Andubon
Warbler in pines and ? Golden-named
Tinglet in Douglas Fir. Noted Juncoes
and Robins, and heard Hermit Thrushes
singing. Took Mountain Chickadee at edge
of firtrees.
July 5.

Clear, cool morning, slight watherly breeze.
Left camp at 6:40 PM, walking over low ridge
into canyon to west, a narrower canyon with
dry streambed. Timber had been cutover, mainly
