July 3. 2 mi W Ft Howes R.S., 4000 ft, Powder River Co., Mont.
Drove from Ashland through Horse Deer to Cow
Agency in Big Horn County. Generally open grass-
land often dotted with Artemesia, mostly
rolling hills with some more broken pine hill
country. Common birds were Bronzed Grackle,
Meadowlark,
Eastern Kingbird, Magpie, and Cliff Swallow,
Dark Sparrow. Dark Buntings seen occasionally,
mostly in small colonies. Noted Flowered Larks
2 mi W Busby and sparingly thereafter -
none seen previously since one taken by Purcel
at first camp.
Proceeded through Hardin to Billings and
back toward Hardin, driving to Prior and
camping on Prior Creek, 8 mi S Prior.
July 4. Prior Creek, 8 mi S Prior, Big Horn Co., Montana.
Drove south, leaving at 6:30 AM proceeded
through gap in Prior Mts and thence east
along Sage Creek to Shriver, Carbon County, in
Gusta National Forest. Finally made camp
in area 2 mi East.
2 mi E Shriver, 6500 ft, Carbon Co., Mont.
Made camp on stream in N-S canyon
on north-facing slope draining into Sage Creek.
Area downstream along Sage Creek farmed by
several persons, mostly livestock and
alfalfa. Camp in area J montane coniferous
