K Dixon 1947 Journal July 1. 2 mi W Ft Hawes C.S. 7000 ft., Powder River Co, Mont. singing; Robins disturbed when I shot latter; Bullock Oriole singing infrequently and keeping to cover. Red-shafted Flickers active. Took 57 Redwing (No 97) in cottonwood below camp. Shot Say Phoebe on wire near camp at 6:00 PM. Found small rattlesnake in road at sunset - very aggressive, striking frequently at sticks - Russell shot at it twice with .22 scattershot wandering snake slightly and causing it to withdraw head into fold formed by loop of body. Snake struck again when prodded. Held it while Russell picked it up with forceps and placed it in can. Small bats flying over pool at dusk. efforts to collect same unsuccessful. One bat (apparently) dipped at surface of pool repeatedly - possibly after aquatic insects (?) July 2. 2 mi W Ft Hawes R.S. 7000 ft., Powder River Co, Montana. Clean cold morning, calm at 5:00 AM. Proceeded up steep rocky slope to north of camp following a Cassin Kingbird as it shifted perches in scattered pines on this south-facing slope. Noted House Wren, 77.
