K Dixon 1947 Journal July 1. 2mi W.F. Howards, 1000 ft., Powder River, Mont. saddled in the fork of a limb of a pine at the edge of the grove (open growth of Yellow Pine). Next about 16 feet above ground and 7 feet out from trunk. Branches below nest on that side 2 yrs were dead and needleless. Nest made up of outer portion of pine needles and grass culms lined with roots of fine grass stems. 3 eggs in nest. F flew by as I was in tree and perched in adjacent pine, giving Keelan call and song. Shifted perch twice before I approached closely enough to shoot but I failed to kill bird. Noted immature Crossbills (2 couples begging) and Bob-tailed Lark Sparrows in these same woods. Collected F Redwing in territory domination from that of 5 No74 taken June 27. Followed Bronzed Grackle in this area and stalked it in pines but failed to collect it. (collected singing M House Wren in willows up stream from camp at noon. Took M Yellow Warbler in fox elder in same area at 1:30 PM. Warm in heat of day with few birds active; Wrens & Yellow Warblers
