R Dixon 1947 Journal June 30, 4 mi W F+ Howes RS, 7400 ft., Powder River Co, Mont. Rode to this area in truck with W Russell arriving at 06:10 AM. Horned Owl crossed road as we approached pine forest in which we were to hunt. Clear cool morning, dew on gress. This is an area of denser, better- developed yellow pine forest, cut over with many large trees (100 ft., 3 foot diameter) and considerable area of closely spaced pine reproduction. Undergrowth grass and other herbs, with scattered low shrubs, chiefly Rose. Area in same drainage as our camp, being near headwaters of creek flowing through camp. Overbird singing, silent when I tried to call it up. Noted White winged Junco in stand of young pine. House Wrens, Common singing. Followed Audubon Warbler in the tops but unable to get a shot. Wood Pewees abundant. Collected Trail Flycatcher in upper parts of pines. Noted Lark Sparrow at edge of meadow. Mountain Bluebird in tree tops. Heard Cowbirds several times and collected & - another pair flew away as I shot. Noted small snake probably immature yellow bellied Racer which entered hole in ground.
