My efforts to collect the Nighthawks were if no avail. Wind sprang up at 8:40 PM - 6 mph Westerly. A bat flew around me circling several times and flew on. I left the area at 09:00 PM without seeing any more nighthawks after the wind rose. Poorwill had been calling to north before 08:30. Another bat circled around me as I descended slope. June 28, 2 mi W Ft. Howes R.S. 4000 ft, Powder River Co, Montana. Left camp at 07:00 AM proceeding to ridge 1/2 mi NE of camp. Efforts to find Nighthawk met unsuccessful. Clear, warm, calm. Worked along edge of woodland noting Meadowlark, Robin and Chipping Sparrows. Collected White-breasted Nuthatch (No 78) foraging in pine hunk in somewhat open stand of Yellow Pine on north-facing slope. Collected 2 White-winged Junco which was in juniper growth (shrub-like) with ?. "Thup" note given several times during course of observations. Pair in pine on low bowl at one time; ? chased Black-capped Chickadee family group away. Wood Pewee in area. Took immature White-breasted Nuthatch in this area. Walked west to edge of woods and collected Chipping
