K Dixon 1947 Journal June 27. 2 mi W Ft. Howe D.S., 1000 ft., Powder River Co, Mont. Noted a large flock of crow-like birds flying across draw on south-facing slope to perch in pines. Birds calling raucously, single notes. I commenced walking towards them. (now) 8:15 Noted pair of Cowbirds on wires. Violet-green Swallows flying from area I nest in rocks of cliff. I ascended cliff and failed in attempt to collect Jay. Entire flock took wing approximately 75 birds. They settled and stopped calling except for one bird, possibly wounded. I stalked the birds which were perched in yellow pines upslope among rocks. I shot the bird which was doing most of calling. An adult M., molting, Hates 4 mm (no 73). Returned to camp, noting Mountain Bluebirds and pair of Sparrow Hawks en route. Hailstorm in late afternoon - clearing at 7:00 PM. Ascended ridge in area 1/2 mile NE of camp - plateau top open - grass and scattered Artemisia to 1 1/2 ft. Arrived on top at 8:00 PM - noted Cotton tail at edge of pine woods at edge of slope. Nighthawks flying high - booming and calling. Sunset at this time. 15 minutes later the nighthawks commenced
