DeMay, D.D. 1942 Stellula calliope Calliope Hummingbird May 21. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Nest of Calliope hummingbird found about 50 ft. below falls on E. fork of Sheep Creek, in small oak tree, about 10 ft. from trail. Dr. Miller says nest contains 2 white eggs. Female hummer hovers around nest, returns to it, and sits watching us. Turns head from side to side. Leaves nest after a few minutes, and returns. This repeated several times, May 28. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Reached falls on Sheep Creek at about 10:45 A.M. and found ? hummer still on nest. Returned at 11:30, and watched nest for about 2 hours. Hummer seemed nervous at first, and hovered about nest, flying a few feet, stopping, flying on again. She left and returned to nest many times, always watching us. She was disturbed again when Mr. Dixon came to take her pictures, but quieted down on nest when the observers sat quietly. She kept watching us, however, and left the nest when we moved about. She dsems to fly away downstream, and always returns cautiously, stopping on several branches before returning to nest. Marie reported this
