The snake did not try to bite, but wrapped itself around my arm and excreted a foul-smelling substance on my skin. Two small garter snakes seen in marsh grass on Zumwalt meadows. While setting pocket gopher traps about 100 ft. south of camp saw garter snake moving through needles and dead twigs and cones beneath a large yellow pine. No marshy or moist ground nearby. Caught snake in hands, taking care that it "slimed" me very little.
