(cont) insects from the surface of the rocks by sticking out their tongues and gathering them in. Young lizards are very numerous here now, but are harder to catch than the adults because they are not generally heavy enough to pull the noose tight. May 28. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif roamed two Scolopus near S.W. side of bridge. Nos. (41) and (42). Among rocks. May 29. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Cought one Scolopus (43) in trap set on south-facing slope, north of main road, on N.E. side of river. Near a fallen log among manzanita, pines, and cedar. The tail and hind legs remained dark in color, but the rest of the body, anterior to the place where the trap struck, became lighter during the day. It seems probable that the spine was broken, and the back of the body became paralyzed. The lizard looked dead in the trap, but proved to be alive when examined in the late afternoon.
