Eumeces skiltonianus
Western Skink
June 1. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif.
(cont.) going under fallen cedar log in shady grove
of small cedars, red dogwood, and bracken ferns
beside a quiet pool near the S bank of Kings R.
When I tried to catch him, he disappeared under
the log. A few minutes later, he came out and
looked at me, but disappeared at once when I
moved. The skink reappeared several times, peeping
out from beneath the log, but he always kept his
eye on me, and would not let me get close enough
to catch him.
