DeMay 2, 1942 Journal June 2. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Cal. (cont.) except Mrs. Shinnell and Marie, hiked down the road past Sheep Creek Camp to get our traps. Harvey Fisher shot a female marmot (57) with a slingshot on the way down. Caught nothing in 15 traps except another ? Phalangid (Pistolephus, sp.? ), which was either eating the crushed walnut bait or laying eggs in it. Trap set under edge of cedar log. Pickled specimen in formalin. Caught pocket gopher (56) in burrow just south of camp. Weather a little cloudy and wind cool, but quite warm in the sun. Stuffed animals this morning and early afternoon. Saw deer this morning in Sheep Creek Camp. Jays and Robins much in evidence about camp. At about 12:45 P.M., Josephine found a chipmunk drowned in the toilet bowl here at camp. The specimen proved to be a nursing mother, and, according to Mrs. Shinnell, had evidently fallen in when it came there for a drink. So far as I am aware, this is a new ecologic niche for chipmunks.
