De May 21. 1942 journal June 1. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Weather this morning not quite as cold as before. Sky almost cloudless; sun warm; very little wind. Found a phalangid on my sleeping bag this morning at 7:00 A.M. Probably a ♂ Protaphus. Pickled it in formalin. Later, found a ♀ phalangid of the same species on one of my traps set on the west bank of Sheep Creek. It appeared to be eating the crushed walnut meat that was used to bait the trap. This specimen also preserved in formalin. Caught one Peromyscus (5♀) in the traps this morning. Hard binglet note : " --- - -- -" repeatedly this forenoon in the trees north of camp. Notes of creeper and of grosbeak also heard. Steller jays still much in evidence. There are vast numbers of flies around camp, and several varieties of ants. The traps usually swarm with large and small ants in the mornings. Mrs. Grinnell suggests that the ants may have driven out some of the small rodents in this area. A deer wandered down from the mountains to the south again; walked around camp for a while, and disappeared. The deer that we saw a day or so ago had spike antlers about 4 inches long.
