De May 2, 1. 1942 Journal May 30. Cedar Grove, S Fork Kings R, 4600 ft, Fresno Co., Calif. Temperature still cold in early morning, but did not seem as cold as yesterday. After the sun is up, it is hot in the sun and cool in the shade. The slight wind is cool. Brought in 15 traps set on S-facing slope on N.E. side of river near main road. Caught nothing but a single Junco (44). After stuffing Junco went along road to Zumwalt Meadows, and stopped at Sentinel campground to catch Scelopus. Stopped at 7, because this will fulfill our quota of 50 of this species. Heard Nuttall flycatcher, chickadees, and robins and Steller jays. Saw several gray squirrels, chickarees, ground squirrels, and a deer. Looked at the water ouzel's nest under the bridge on the way back, but nothing was stirring. The robin east of the bridge sat near her nest and scolded me, so I did not climb up to look at the young in the nest. Robins and jays are both very bold around camp. The Steller jays are very noisy, and have a wide variety of calls or notes. Some of them sound like the notes of ground squirrels.
