May 26, 1942 Journal May 26. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. (cont.) Another gartersnake in grass of meadow. Deserted birds' nest in small fir tree. Another gartersnake. Alligator lizard in grass in meadow. On north side of river, saw a flock of purple finches; red dogwood; many robins. On trail back, saw a 4 black-headed grosbeak (black above, lemon yellow below; white stripes across eye). Several swallow-tail butterflies (black and yellow). Found tick on me when we got back to camp. May 27. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Wiked to Zummwalt meadows to pick up trap line. Left end of road about 7:30 A.M. Saw and heard chipping sparrow; Calif. purple finch; western tanager; 2 gray squirrels in cedar. In Zummwalt meadows saw small gartersnake, violet green swallows, white-throated swifts, sedwing blackbirds. Heard frogs. Saw robins; jays; 2 hawks (?); chipping sparrows in willows; Calif. purple finch in meadows. Back at camp at 1:30 P.M. My traps (30) all empty. One Peromyscus, one chipping (or song?) sparrow, and one gartersnake is all that was caught today. Yesterday we caught one warbler, one Peromyscus, and one Micratus in 200 traps.
