De May J. S. 1942 Journal May 25. Cedar Grove, S Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno D., Calif. 38 Peromyscus collected. Chickadees heard in camp at 7:00 A.M. Also robins. Deer seen bounding through camp at about 7:15 A.M. Chickarees and gray squirrels abundant. Jays as noisy as ever. A falcon (probably F. mexicanus) seen wheeling over camp at noon. Also White- throated Swifts. Started hiking toward Zumwalt Meadow from end of road at about 1:30 P.M. Saw several houses of Streator woodpecker in a dense grove of pines and cedars. Some look deserted. Species identified by Mr. Dijon. Large sugar pines here, one with trap set for fisher. Place on ground pawed by deer (for fungi); more "pussy paws", and lots of lupins. Chipping sparrow; two white-headed woodpeckers seen on trunk of tree. Cassin vireos heard calling, "Jimmy! Jimmy, come here!" (Dijon). Small sunflowers; fir trees; yellow-wood violets; piñon pine; 4 mule deer; Indian paintbrush, Sceloporus undulatus caught by one of party, and alligator lizard caught by another. Service-berry shrub with white flowers (bush about 10 ft. across). Purple violets in damp, already pale. Snowplant. More chipping sparrows heard, and Colorado marbles.
