De May, J. S. 1942 Journal May 20. South Fork Kings R., 4000 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Swift picked up beside road beneath cliff. Injuries to skull indicate that the bird was killed by striking some object. (White-throated Swift) (#/15). May 21. Cedar Grove, S. Fork Kings R., 4600 ft., Fresno Co., Calif. Made camp in campgrounds just east and south of junction of Kings River and Sheep Creek, in an open stand of yellow pine and incense cedars. Pine needles and a sparse grass cover the ground. There is very little other undergrowth. A few snow plants were seen near the camp. In camp, saw Steller Jays and robins. On trail through mountains south of camp to falls of East Fork of Sheep Creek found ground nearly covered with a low growth called "mountain misery". Sugar pines interspersed with yellow pines and cedars. A few more snow plants. Scolopax graciosa abundant in Mt. misery, on fallen logs, and on rocks. Saw robins and Calaurus warbler. Nest of Calliope hummingbird found near (50 feet below) falls on East Fork of Sheep Creek, in oak beside trail. Contains 2 white eggs. Female hummer hovers around nest, returns to it, and sits watching us, head turning from
