Paul DeBenedictis 1961 23 Aug Calypte anna Botanical Gardens, Univ. of Calif., Berkeley, Calif. visited Bot. Gardens to check hummers noted 2 Anna are present but seem to have shifted in position somewhat. The thistles at the far end of the bed are gone, so is the Anna. Here a Selaesphorus sasir was seen on the cals, uncontented. The milkweed is almost gone, and nothing appears to be occupying it. The second male territory is present occupied by a 2 Anna, who seems to hold pretty much the same territory. Another Anna was found in the N.W. corner of the area, about 30 yards from the male mentioned above. They were not seen to conflict. Few hummers apparent now. The thistle is Cirsium occidentale var. candidissimum, from Red Hill, Plumas Co., Calif. In a second area geraniums grew abundantly, and, being in full bloom, form an excellent food supply. Here, in an area about the size of the range of one anna? in the more open Calif. Bed, 3 males and 3 4 Selaesphorus sasir feed, and apparently staked out ranges. 2 Anna + one? showed strong territorial behavior. One bird diving, but probably a S. sasir.
