It was nearly hidden in the grass and was discovered by the rustling in the grass. It made no attempt to bite, but only rattled when pinned down and poked into a jaw. The faint noise from the tiny rattles could barely be heard from four feet away. The snake was found in an open meadow 5 mile long x 200 yards wide surrounded by pine forest. The snake was about 70 yards from the forest. The meadow was covered with green grass 1-2' tall. There were several boulders 2'x2'x2' in the area where the snake was found. The snake was 3' from a log 25' long x 2' in diameter; other than 2 small logs 3'x1' there was no other cover in the meadow other than numerous gopher holes. The weather at the time was partly but the sun was shining. There was a light wind. The ground was wet from recent rains."
