July 21 Garberville, Calif to Van Damme St Paul (alt west-facing)
cup of grass and mud on rock face, open flat tailed
white the rounded shaped nest of Cliff Swallow), Western
Woodpecker, lesser Goldfinch, Rough-winged Swallows (nesting
in holes in a east facing rocky-dirt cliff overlooking the
river), Killdeer, Calif. Quail, [illegible] Kingfisher, Oregon
Junco. Area is French's Hotel near Garberville on
101. White throated Swift at Hartly Creek. Cormorants
on the rocks. Barn + Cliff Swallows along the road.
Goldfinch on the [illegible]. Stopped in a canyon south of
[illegible] went past Fort Ross. Lots of birds along a creek. Most
were Song Sparrows + Allen Hummers, but also
saw Black Phoebe, American Goldfinch, Orange-Crowned
Wormbler, White-Crowned Sparrow, Hummeros, Bush-tits,
Barn, Cliff, + Violet-Green Swallows, ?Western Flycatcher
(an Empidonax, yellowbelly, dusky [illegible]), turkey
vulture, crow, western Gulls by the ocean. Lots of
Rana boylii in the creek along with Sliklebacks.
Elvey saw a black oystercatcher. Farther down a
knimout (very good tennant) produced few birds,
mostly Gull + Cormorants in the water. 3 very inter-
esting bird rock (?cormorants) betweens here and
the lost stop. Flickers along the cliff. Stopped for lunch
at Mac Kennicher State Park. Saw Caspian tern, white-
Crown Sparrow, Turkey vulture, crow, robin, heard king-
fishers. In a lake hundreds of transforming toads +
toad tadps, and misseka thamnophis. 2 Ducks. Saw
a Meadow lark along the highway. Later a Raven. Several
