uel DeBenedictis 1961 June 28 Downer Lake, 6000 ft, Nevada Co, Calif. roads to find birds but saw very few, mostly flycatchers. In the chuparral there are many nests in low pine trees - [illegible] No butterflies, but very many chipmunks. Got back about 8, went down to find blues now. Saw a Green-tailed towhee and a crowned sparrow in back of the house. Set about 6 traps for chipmunks. Ate breakfast then went after butterflies. Went to the blue spots (wet meadows) with Tony, got many blues and a Thamnophis. Saw a hermit thrush in the alders. 3 types of blues, [illegible] (1 only, ♀), anna, 5♂♀, associated with a tall yellow clover growing in very wet areas, and saepiolus, in drier areas. Also many crescents, a few silphius & Papiliors. Saw one copper, and got 2 skippers. Coming back met some boys who showed me where they find lizards, but didn't see any. While I was gone, got a chipmunk which Mary let go (still alive), and found another in a trap in the bushes in back.. Took all the traps in them (about 12). Put it up, poorly. I've no real skin for me. Later in the afternoon went after checkerspots, got 8♂♀, 2♀, + a pine to western elphin, a few blues, and a crescent. Only birds seen were flycatchers (pewees, I believe). Saw 2 Sceloporus, one on rocks, one running across road. One was quite bluish-green above, and ate an ant while I watched.
