Danda, D. 1981 Journal Mexico Oct. 23 Up at ~ 6:30 A.. Left Playa Azul and ate breakfast at a new hotel on the west side of Cetenacer. I drove straight thru to Veracruz via Mex. Hwy. 180. This is a good, flat road and is easy to make turns on. We then took Mex. Hwy. 140 from Veracruz to Jalapa (NW); also good road, but trucks slow you down. We arrived in Jalapa at ~ 1:00 P. We drove thru the downtown. Jalapas seems to be a very charming city, but very confusing and difficult to drive in. Hotels seem far and few between here. We quickly left downtown and found a place on out of town on Hwy. 14. The Brown Hotel Avion - what Ted calls a "run in front of you hotel". Basically a "no-tell motel". A guy runs in front of your car after you pull in, directs you to a garage, closes the door after you, and accepts the room payment thru a smaller window in the garage door. Identities are therefore kept secret. Despite this atmosphere, this seems to be a new, very good hotel - clean and also with laundry service.
